Helen Frances Alford McManus, 82, a native of Pike County and resident of the Progress community, died April 28, 2009, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland.

Visitation is 4 to 8 tonight at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb and 9 a.m. Saturday at Progress Baptist Church until services there at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Silver Springs Baptist Church cemetery.

Mrs. McManus was born June 27, 1926, to Elmer C. and Willie Belle Hall Alford.

In 1947, she married Clyde McManus Jr. During their 42 years of marriage, they lived in Jackson, where they raised their three children, and later returned to Progress upon Mr. McManus’ retirement from Illinois-Central Railroad.

Family members said, “Helen would light up the room with her personality. Giving of herself freely, she never met a stranger. Beauty came easily for her, whether it was with her beloved flowers or beholding her children, grandchildren or friends. What a joy she was to be with: always positive, always sensitive to others, always caring and always loving. Her faith in and relationship with Jesus was an example for everyone. What a true gift she was. Helen passed these gifts, and her love of music, to her family and loved ones.”

Mrs. McManus was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, John Alford McManus and Ann of Jackson, and William Clyde McManus and Debbie of Birmingham; a daughter and son-in-law, Jenea McManus Partyka and Mark of Birmingham; five grandchildren, Elizabeth McManus and Wes McManus of Jackson, and Brittany McManus, Andrew Partyka and Laurel Partyka, all of Birmingham; and her beloved dog, Sassy.

Pallbearers are Bill McManus, Mark Partyka, Wes McManus, John McManus, Tony Martin and Bennie Tate. Honorary pallbearers are Hollis Alford and Buddy Simmons.

Memorials may be made to Progress Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Betty Simmons, 1122 Highway 575, Magnolia, MS 39652; or Hospice Ministries, 450 Towne Center Blvd., Ridgeland, MS 39157.
