Obituaries of North Carolina Alfords

Prepared for AAFA’s Annual Meeting

October 2001

Raleigh, NC

This compilation was the first “meeting state” compilation of obituaries. More recent “meeting state” obituary compilations have much more extensive AAFA NOTES, but in the interest of making it available online, it is presented here for the most part as it was published and has not been updated with more recent North Carolina obituaries.

All of these obituaries have been published in AAFA ACTION. Some were published there later than the 2001 publication of this compilation, in the Winter 2004 issue.

HOLLY SPRINGS, April 8—The funeral of the late Col. G. Bent Alford was held in the Methodist church here Sunday afternoon at 3 oclock.... The Junior Order Lodge of Holly Springs of which Col. Alford was a member, assisted at the grave. The honorary pall-bearers were General Julian S. Carr and _____ Cole, of Durham, and the following of Raleigh: Jos. G. Brown, G.H. Andrews, Armistead Jones, Gen. Albert L. Cox, Daniel Allen, John A. Park, W.A. Myatt, James A. Higgs, Howard White, Dr. Jas. R. Rogers, V. Royster, Wm. Henry Penny, and Millard Mial.

The active pall-bearers were: D. Carlyle Adams, of Raleigh; J.F. Jones, Willie A. Jones, D.A. Baker, C.C. Ferguson and Jason Smith, of Holly Springs.

Col. Alford was a member of Company I 41st Regiment, Third North Carolina Cavalry. He joined this command at Dinwiddie Court House, Va., in October, 1864, and was in action afterwards at Stony Creek, Bellfield and other engagements.

Col. Alfords first wife was Charlotte A. Olive to whom he was married April 28, 1875. Two children, Green Haywood Alford and Mrs. Mattie V. Alford, of Holly Springs, were born of this union. In 1899 he was married to Mrs. Texana Collins, widow of Walter Collins of Holly Springs township. There were no children by this union although his second wife was the mother of four children by her first husband, these being, M.H. Collins, R.F. Collins, and Mrs. M.E. Mims, of Holly Springs, and Lieut. H.W. Collins, of the Engineer Corps, U.S.A., with headquarters at Hopkinsville, Miss.

Col. Alford was a great-grandson of Jam. Tanner Alford, a Revolutionary hero, who fought at the battles of Cowpens and Guilford Court House. His grandfather was Green Alford; born three miles from Wakefield in 1787; and his father was Green Haywood Alford, born June 7, 1820, near Wakefield.

Col. Alford had been in a precarious [?—copy torn] condition since February 14, when he fell and sustained the fracture of a hip.

The article in the News and Observer on the day after his death was in error in saying that he joined the Populist party. He voted for Palmer and Buckner on the gold standard platform against W.J. Bryan as he believed that Mr. Bryan was wrong in his theories as to the currency.

AAFA NOTES: George Benton Alford died on April 5, 1924. Generally called Benton or Bent, he was the first of the seven children of Green Haywood Alford and Rebecca Jones. “George Benton Alford, 1845–1924,” was published in AAFA ACTION December 1990, pp. 32–33, 54. It included two short biographies of George, one published in the early 1900s and one shortly after his death on 5 April 1924. We also published a biography of his father, “Biography: Green Haywood Alford,” March 1989, pp. 22–23. See also “Leslie-Alford-Mims House, Wake Co., NC,” Summer 1999, pp. 59–62.
