Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge Parish, LA—13 December 2002

 

            Margaret Waldrep Alford died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at her home surrounded by the family she loved. She was born on Oct. 15, 1915, to Oscar Peyton and Annie Laurie Waldrep in Jackson, MS. Her family has resided in Hammond since 1918. Margaret graduated from Duke University in 1936, where she was on the dean’s list and member of Kappa Delta social sorority. She completed her graduate studies at Columbia University in New York, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Colorado, the University of Havana, Cuba and the Royal University of Mexico in Mexico City, and received her master’s degree in foreign languages from LSU. Margaret was a professor of foreign languages at Southeastern Louisiana University until 1952, affectionately known to her students as “Senority.” She was active for many years in the First United Methodist Church, AAUW, Women’s Medical Auxiliary and Daughter’s of the American Revolution. She was a former member of the board of directors of First Guaranty Bank. Margaret was married to Charles D. “Bo” Alford, M.D., in 1948, and has devoted all her life to her family and many friends.

            She is survived by her daughter, Anne Elizabeth Alford Flippen of Jackson, MS.; a daughter, Margaret Suzanne Alford Loomis; a son-in-law, Wayland Everett Loomis Jr., of Dallas; grandchildren, James Alford “Ford” Flippen, Wayland Everett Loomis III and Patrick Andrew Loomis; a brother and sister-in-law, O.P. “Red” and Betty Waldrep of Denham Springs; and a niece and four nephews.

            She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Oscar Peyton and Annie Laurie Waldrep; and her sisters, Annie Ruth Waldrep and Elizabeth Waldrep Chalk.

            Visitation at First United Methodist Church, Hammond, from 11 a.m. Saturday until service at Noon. Interment in Greenlawn Cemetery.... Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home of Hammond in charge of arrangements.
