LEONIDAS MARCELUS “LEE” ALFORD

AAFA #0466

1916 MS – 1997 MS

THE CLARION-LEDGER

Jackson, Hinds Co., MS—Monday, 21 July 1997

Lee Alford, 80, of W. Maywood Circle, a retired certified public accountant, died of cancer Sunday [July 20] at his home.

Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home with burial in Lakewood cemetery....

Mr. Alford was a native of Roundaway in Coahoma County. He had lived in Jackson since 1972. He was a graduate of Gulfport High School and attended Millsaps College before graduating from the University of Mississippi in 1938. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.

In 1942, Mr. Alford enlisted in the U.S. Marines and earned the rank of major. He was a licensed accountant in Mississippi and Georgia and had worked for Ernst & Young in Atlanta and Chattanooga, Tenn., until his retirement.

He was a member of Broadmeadow United Methodist Church, a past president of Mississippi Estate Planning Council and was treasurer and director of the Fondren Civitan Club. He was a member of the American Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Mississippi Society of Certified Public Accountants. He was a member of the Military Order of World Wars.

Mr. Alford worked until he was 72, his wife, Marjorie said, “He enjoyed working and he enjoyed working with the different charities too,” she said.

“He enjoyed his friends and was a voracious reader,” his nephew, B.B. Hosch of Natchez said. “He was very dedicated not just to work but to his family too. He worked hard and played hard.”

His son, William Alford of Indianola, was born when Lee Alford was 50, but that didn’t make much of a difference, William said. “There was a generation gap there,” he admitted. “But, he was very supportive of anything I did and he could surprise me with his understanding of things I thought we would disagree on.”

Other survivors include: daughters, Ann Baird [AAFA #0025] and Pat Alford, both of Siloam Springs, Ark.; brother, E. Griffin Alford [AAFA #0452] of Jackson; and three grandchildren....
