Winston-Salem, Forsyth Co., NC—23 June 1998

HIGHLANDS—Julius Anderson “Jake” Alford, Jr., 70, of Clear Creek Road, Highlands, died Thursday, June 11, 1998 at his home. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 13, at 2 p.m. in the Goldmine Baptist Church.... Pallbearers were Ray McCall, John McCall, Gilbert Beck, Bobby Creswell, Tom Coffey and Dick Watson. Burial was in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery. The Franklin VFW Post 7339 and American Legion Post 108 conducted complete military graveside rites....

            He was a native of Jackson County, Mississippi [sic—should be Hinds Co.], the son of the late Julius A. Sr. and Hilma Burdine Alford. He was retired after 28 years of service in the U.S. Air Force. He owned and operated Highlands Refrigeration and was a 25-year member of the Highlands Lions Club.

            He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Virginia “Ginny” Dunkin Alford; three daughters, Holly (Tom) Coffey of Pfafftown, Julie McCall of Highlands, and Michelle “Shelly” Alford-Williams of San Jose, California; three sons, Steven “Andy” Alford of Goldmine, Greg P. Alford of Atlanta, GA and Christopher Alford of Greensboro; a sister, Patricia Granberg of Blanco, TX; and nine grandchildren....

            Bryant Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

AAFA NOTES: SSDI records show that Julius A. Alford (SS# issued in TX) was born 7 Aug 1927, last residence Highlands, Macon Co., NC.

            We included the obituaries of his parents, Julius Anderson Alford Sr. and Helen Burdine Alford, in South Carolina Obituaries; and his sister Patricia Ann Alford Granberg, AAFA #1228, in Texas Obituaries.

            Julius “Jake” Alford attended only the meeting in Decatur, AL, but he was active in AAFA and left his mark on the Association. While he will be missed, we are pleased that his wife Mary notified us that she wants to continue with an active membership.
