PURPOSE OF THE ASSOCIATION
1. To collect, record, preserve, disseminate, and perpetuate biographical data
and historical information on Alfords(including all
spelling variations)and their ancestors.
2. To educate members, particularly those of the younger generations, on Alford
family history and how it relates to the history
of our nation.
3. To further fellowship and camaraderie within the living Alford family.
NOTE ON SPELLING VARIATIONS: In addition to the name Alford, The Alford
American Family Association includes the names Alvord, Allford, Alfred,
Halford, Hallford, Holford, and Olford. Misspellings of these names
in written records are numerous. In AAFA's written material, we frequently
put quotation marks around Alford to indicate that we are referring
to all spelling variations, but whenever we say Alford in a general
sense, we are referring to all spellings. Researchers are encouraged
to search indexes thoroughly for both legitimate spelling variations
and for misspellings (Alfird, Alfrod, etc.).

HISTORY OF AAFA AND ITS MEETINGS
The Alford American Family Association (AAFA), incorporated in 1987,
grew out of the work of many "Alfords" around the country whose efforts
were coordinated by Gilbert K. "Gil" Alford, Jr., compiler and publisher
of an Alford family newsletter, "About Alfords."
The first directors, listed alphabetically, were Gilbert K. Alford,
Jr., Julius Mosby Alford, and Lodwick H. Alford. Officers,
established at the creation, were President: Captain Lodwick H. Alford,
U.S. Navy (ret); Vice President: Ambassador Weston Adams; Secretary:
Nancy Alford, Dean of Students, LaGrange College; and Treasurer: Julius
Mosby Alford, Realtor. Pamela Alford Thompson was appointed as the editor
of AAFA publications, Nancy Alford Dietrich as Genealogist and Historian,
and Gil Alford as, for want of a better title, Executive Assistant.
Gil was the driving force behind AAFA,and the keeper of the databases.
The articles of incorporation require AAFA to have an annual corporate
meeting. Since 1988, it has been held in conjunction with a national
Alford family reunion the second weekend in October. (Since the Association
had just been formed in 1987, there was no meeting that year.)
The annual meeting has been held in different states each year.
At each annual meeting the membership selects a meeting state or city
for future meetings. Members and their guests who attend the meetings
find them an enjoyable way to learn about their Alford heritage, participate
in their Association's activities and efforts, visit with extended family,
and meet new cousins!
