WILL OF SUSAN ALFORD
In the name of God Amen, I Susan Alford being of Sound & perfect mind &
memory (blessed be God) do this Second day of
May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred & thirty one, make
& publish this my Last will & Testament in manner
& form following - first to pay all my Just debts.
Item 1st. I lend to my daughter Laney High my tract of Land that is called
the Job Tract during her natural life, and at her death
to be equally divided between my Two Grand Sons Hutson High and Green High heirs
of my Said daughter Laney High I also
lend her one pine table & at her death, I give the said table to my great
grand daughter Laney Ross Griffin. I further lend to
daughter Laney High my blue painted chest six stool Chairs one large pot &
one Huckle & at her death I give the blue painted
chest to my great grand daughter Laney Fletcher.
Item 2nd. I give & bequeath one half of my stock of cattle to the bodily
issues of my grand daughter Clary Ray but for my said
grand daughter Clary Ray to have the use of said cattle her life without them
being subject to the disposal of her husband
Zadock Ray or subject to pay his debts.
Item 3rd. I give & bequeath to my Two great grand daughters Laney Fletcher
& Nancy Helon Fletcher each one bed bedstead
& good furniture.
Item 4th. I give & bequeath to great grand daughter Laney Ross Griffin
one feather Bed & furniture.
Item 5th. I give & bequeath to my grand daughter Elizabeth High daughter
of Laney High one chest of drawers & one feather
bed & furniture one pine table & one Walnut falling table.
Item 6th. I give & bequeath to my two great grand Children William Richardson
High & Polley High one disk six stool Chairs
one walnut falling table one large pot & one skillet & one baufat &
the other half of my cattle to be sold for them by their
Guardian & the money arising from the sale to be equally divided between
them.
Item 7th. I give & bequeath to my great grand daughter Elizabeth Ray daughter
of Clary Ray one featherbed & furniture.
Item 8th & last. It is my will & request that my two negroes Emsley
& Amey & all of my stock & all the residue of my estate
that I have not above disposed of to be sold by my Executors hereafter to be
mentioned on such a credit as is thought
advisable & the money arising from the Sale of Amey I give & bequeath
to my grand daughter Susan Watkins to her & her
Heirs & the money arising from the Sale of Emsley I give one half to my
daughter Laney High & the other half to my two great
grand Children William Richardson High & Polley High & the ballance
of the money Equally divided between my two great
grand Children Jackson Lee & Lawrence Fletcher & my grand Son Alford
High son of Laney High, And I hereby make &
ordain my friend Joiner W. Watkins Executor of this my Last Will and Testament.
In witness whereof I the said Susan Alford have to this my last will &
Testament set my hand & Seal this day & year above
written.
Signed Sealed published & declared in the presence of us who was present
at the time of signing and Sealing the same.

Wake County November Term 1831
The above last Will & Testament of Susan Alford was exhibited in open court
for probate & duly proved by the oaths of
Mathew Strickland & Riley Burne witnesses thereto & ordered to be recorded.

[AAFA Note: Family tradition says that son, Green Alford, was left out of the
will because Lodwick and Susan were very
unhappy about his marriage to Nancy Rose Liles. Nancy had been brought before
the authorities prior to their marriage for
having a child out of wedlock. There is solid proof that Green was a son of
Lodwick and Susan.]
