WEST VIRGINIA OBITUARIES OF ALFORDS
AND SPELLING VARIATIONS
Obituaries are listed alphabetically by FIRST name. Included
are people whose last name, maiden name, or married name is Alford or a
spelling variation: Alfred, Alvord, Allford, Halford, Hallford, Holford, etc.
The name of the newspaper (or other source) and place and
date of publication follow the name of the deceased. If we included the
obituary in AAFA ACTION, the issue is noted.
The Alford American Family Association (AAFA) has often added
notes for each obituary, including Social Security Death Index (SSDI) data, relationship
of the deceased to other Alfords, and lineages. Extensive research notes are
not always included in the interest of making the obituaries available online.
We will add to AAFA NOTES as time
permits.
Where lineages are included (Alford unless otherwise stated),
the format is: Name, year of birth, state or country of birth.
Obituaries of AAFA members and their spouses are also
included on the AAFA
Member Memorials web page and may include more information.
We welcome corrections and additional information. If you
have an obituary from this state that is not included here, please share it
with us!

80-Foot Fall From Bridge Fatal to Fayette Countian
MONTGOMERY, July 5—A fall of more than 80 feet from a
railing of the Montgomery bridge into the Kanawha River at 4 p.m. today
resulted in the death of a 48-year-old Fayette County restaurateur and former
bus line operator.
Jack Alford Sr., of Boomer, was the victim.
Mrs. Don Vickers of Montgomery told police she
saw Alford sitting on a railing of the bridge linking this Fayette County city
with U. S. Rt. 60, and then suddenly tumble off and fall into the river below.
The body was recovered within a short time after
the fatal fall by Woodrow Ramsey, 41, and J.C. Carver Jr., 24, both of
Montgomery. The body was floating when it was recovered by the men, who reached
the scene in a small boat.
Dr. R.A. Updike of Montgomery was called to the
river bank where the body was pulled ashore. He gave artificial respiration,
but the man never regained consciousness. Dr. Updike said the death was due to
drowning and probable internal injuries.
Fayette County does not have a county coroner,
and Justice of the Peace Montgomery Hancock, acting coroner for the Montgomery
district was out of the city yesterday. It was not known whether or not an
inquest will be held.
Mr. Alford was owner and operator of Boomer
Lunch at the nearby community of Boomer. He formerly operated the Blue Ribbon
Bus Lines and other independent bus services in this area.
Surviving are his wife, Opal; two daughters,

MARY MAXINE LEASURE ALFORD
Source unknown
Charleston, Kanawha Co., WV—Sunday, 13 June 1948
A
woman was killed and two other women and a man were injured early yesterday
when the new station wagon in which they were riding struck a utility pole and
turned over three times on the Coal River Road just west of St. Albans.
The victim was identified at the Bartlett
mortuary in St. Albans as Mrs. Mary Maxine Alford of Danville, Boone county,
26-year old wife of Coach Clyde D. Alford of Madison high school.
State Trooper W. S. Webb of South Charleston and
Mrs. Alford suffered a broken neck.
Two of her companions, Francis Noland Dawson, 26
of 108 Spring St., St. Albans, and Mrs. Louise Phillips Midkiff, 26, of Kanawha
Terrace, St. Albans, were in “fair” condition last night at Herbert J. Thomas
Memorial hospital in South Charleston, but attendants said their chances for
recovery are “good”.
Dawson, who was driving the automobile, received
a fractured shoulder and possible internal injuries.
Mrs. Midkiff received severe scalp and head
lacerations, attending physicians said, but she was “resting comfortably” last
night.
A third occupant of the vehicle and
sister-in-law of the dead woman, Mrs. Helen Arthur Leasure, 22, of Washington
D.C., received minor bruises and shock in the mishap, state police said. She
was not hospitalized.
Trooper Webb said Dawson apparently lost control
of the car on a slight curve and crashed into the utility pole, turning over
three times. The vehicle was demolished.
The accident occurred at 3 a. m. three-fourths
of a mile off the old Midland Trail.
Mrs. Alford and the other three occupants of the
car earlier had attended a party given by the St. Albans American Legion post,
Trooper West said, and left the party for Lower Falls on Coal river to see if
anyone was swimming.
The accident occurred while they
were returning from the beach, he said.
Mr. Alford was in Morgantown attending West
Virginia university’s summer coaching school.
Trooper Webb, Cpl. R.T. Cummings and St. Albans
Patrolman Lewis Fizer investigated the accident.
Funeral service for Mrs. Alford will be at 2
p.m. tomorrow at the Bartlett mortuary chapel in St. Albans. Rev. J.E. Myers
will officiate and interment will follow in Cunningham Memorial park. The body
will remain at the funeral home until time of service.
Surviving Mr. Alford besides her husband are her
parents, whom she was visiting, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Leasure of 1007
Pennsylvania Av., St. Albans; a two-year-old daughter, Susan; and three
brothers, Charles and Paul Leasure, both of St. Albans, and William Leasure of
Washington, D.C.

THE HERALD-DISPATCH
Huntington, Cabell Co., WV—Friday, 11 July 2008
Putnam County man blessed others for many, many years
By Bill Ellis
Tuesday morning, March 18, 2008, in Naples,
Fla., I called my dear friend, Norris Ellis Alford, and asked, “How does it
feel to be 100 years and one day old?” He replied with a chuckle, “I’m starting
on my second hundred today.”
He lived at Scott Depot, until he passed from this
life at 8:30 on Sunday morning, July 6.
Norris Alford, the son of Stafford and Lyda
Escue Alford, was a lifelong resident of Lincoln County, St. Albans (Kanawha
County) and Scott Depot (Putnam County), all within close proximity. He was a
member of the Church of God. He and my dad, Clarence Ellis, were ushers at the
Scott Depot Church of God with Paul Eggleton, Cecil Fulks, William Eggleton,
Lon Perry, Hank Maddox, Clarence Smith, Homer Maddox and Ralph Briscoe.
After retiring from FMC in 1971, following 38
years of employment, he continued to operate “Alford’s Lawnmower and Fixit Shop”
in Teays Valley for more than 35 years. Gary Young of G & G Builders said, “Mr.
Alford kept my mowers running in good shape for many years.”
Not long before his 100th birthday, I took his
mail in and watched him read it without glasses. Having left my watch at home,
I looked across the dining room to the kitchen from the living room, to glance
at the clock on the microwave, but couldn’t see it. He looked up, without glasses,
and said, “It’s 3:30.” He had been blinded many years earlier in one eye by an
acid mishap at the plant. After that painful accident, he was soon back to work
at the same job.
Speaking during the service of remembrance, at
Chapman Funeral Home on Thursday, July 10, the Rev. Keith Hudson, officiating
minister, spoke of his tremendous knowledge about many things. He recalled that
engineers would often ask him about things in the plant they did not have
answers for. He usually did and was able to help. The Rev. Dr. Rodney Taylor
spoke of the times when he had talked with Mr. Alford about the things of God
and eternal life and the many times they prayed together. He was a man of deep
faith and commitment to the will of God. He now understands more completely
than St. Paul did when he wrote about being “absent from the body and ... present
with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8).
Norris Ellis Alford loved his family, his
church, his country and God. He missed his beloved wife, Jewell, of 67 years.
They were sweethearts forever. He often talked about her, especially on days
like their wedding anniversary, her birthday and Mothers Day.
He looked forward to daily phone calls from one
or more of his children. Dolly, Lowella and Norris loved their father and often
brought or sent special gifts for him. They set an example for all children in
terms of being attentive to parents in their older years.
He lived closer than any other neighbor. He was
one of the great men I have known. I was honored to speak at his funeral. Psalm
116:15 puts it best, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His
saints.”
