The linked list of genealogies arranged alphabetically within DNA groupings begins about one screen below. It is essential that you understand the following text though.

You should also understand that these genealogies are being linked from the AAFA Members list. This effort is underway but far from finished. One can access the members list from the link in the blue navigation bar found near the top of many pages.

The following are what we see as the Alford branches of the family or limbs of the Alford family tree. They will be identified, summarized, or otherwise described on this page and explored in depth on subordinate pages. The branches are being redefined on a continuing basis. Some of these are works in progress and they may not be complete. We used to truncate genealogies in an effort to protect the privacy of the living. We are now including living persons but excluding all personal data. If you have need for more data on living persons contact the association and request a private copy containing details on the living. Some are being posted on an "as is" basis, and we will revise them (with your help?) as we learn more. Please let us know if you can correct or add to this information. We are especially anxious to hear from you if you can provide information to connect two or more of the branches.

Some of the posted genealogies are very skimpy. Be assured that AAFA members are always researching to extend the lines. In a few instances a notation similar to [##/##] follows an entry. This is the AAFA ACTION issue number and page number where an AAFA member lineage, related to this ancestor, was published. In some cases we are initially listing several ancestors from the branch because we are not sure which ancestor you will be searching for here. We eventually narrow these down to one entry. [A-##] in red, following the branch ID is the same as the ID or GAP# found in the second column in the Y-DNA results chart (Alford Y-DNA Project)and the DNA Group numbers used here correspond to the "Lineage" numbers shown in Roman numerals.

Please note that as a work in progress the data is tentative and should be considered as such. There is no proof for much of it so there must be error. There are obvious omissions. Use it only as a clue for further research.

The date listed for each genealogy is the date of the file being shown. It some cases it is the date of last update and in some it is not. We are also adding a reference to the last time the genealogy, or a part of it, was published in the quarterly. This is an ongoing effort.

As indicated above the branches are organized by Alford DNA groups and then arranged alphabetically. We need DNA results from any and all male Alfords. For more about Alford DNA please go to ALFORD DNA.

DNA Group One (1)
Haplogroup R1b - Lineage 1

According to DNA test results from male descendants in these branches, they all have a common Alford ancestor. So far we do not have traditional genealogical connections.

Charles Alford 1790 NC. [A-21] This is one of our smaller branches, but we believe Charles was a brother of John Alford b. about 1786 NC. See him below. Charles married Mary Tipton and they had nine children. Some of the family remained in Tennessee but others went to Illinois and Texas. Our genealogy extends through five sons. Jul 12 2010

Clarence Alford 1895 GA. [A-4] There is not enough data on this person and his descendants to create a genealogy. Over half of the few records we have are for the living. As a substitute please see the members ahnentafel via this link.

Exum Alford ca 1788 NC. [A-20] Exum married Elizabeth and had at least four children. The AAFA genealogy extends through three of the sons. Mar 30 2009.

Isham Alford 1755 NC - 1832 GA. [A-12] [A-35] [A-59] [A-82] This branch extends through three sons and a daughter. Some have listed Isham as a son of Lodwick Alford who was born about 1710 in VA and settled in Franklin Co., NC (part of the John 1645 branch below). While there is considerable circumstantial evidence in this direction, we have found no proof. Descendants are primarily in Georgia and states to the west. Jan 11 2009. Email the Isham Alford Branch Manager: Janice Smith.

James Alford ca 1715 VA - 1782 VA. [A-42] James married Lucy Bailey and they were of Fluvanna and Goochland Counties, VA. They had nine children but the genealogy extends primarily through sons Charles b. ca 1752 and Jacob b. ca 1757. Both migrated to Kentucky.Sep 23 2008. A segment of this genealogy, descendants of Gabriel b. about 1831, {register #97 in this genealogy} son of Jesse Alford & Lucinda Robison, was published in AAFA ACTION #84, Spring 2009.

James Lodwick Alford 1749 NC. [A-2] James Lodwick married Susannah Ross and had eight children. The AAFA genealogy extends through all of the children except one who probably died young. The branch is mostly in North Carolina, Georgia and Mississippi. Sep 23 2008. A genealogy of their son, Cade Alford, was published in AAFA ACTION #77, Summer 2007. A genealogy of Julius Alford & Ann Hays was published in AAFA ACTION #64, Summer 2004. Julius connects to James Lodwick through an uncertain ancestor.

John Alford 1645 - 1710 ??. [A-3] [A-28?] [A-33] [A-36] [A-37?] [A-41] [A-45] [A-53] [A-55] [A-56] [A-81] John is probably the father of the James Alford born about 1687 in Virginia and through whom most of the genealogy extends. The two main elements are Lodwick 1710 VA and Julius 1717 VA, but there are smaller lesser known limbs of this tree. Descendants of John covered the southeastern part of the country and spread across the gulf states.

AAFA has more members, with more descendants, associated with this Alford ancestor than with any other. Segments of the file, or limbs of this family tree, will be uploaded or updated and linked as available. This cascading list of main groups is in a modified outline format. The Roman numerals represent generations down from John Alford. Conventional modified register reports with much more detail are linked to the entries. The data overlaps a generation or two and because of updating by segment the register numbers from one segment may not match with register numbers in the adjoining segments.

Note: A red asterisk "*" following a date means it is an estimate.

Haplogroup R1b - Lineage II

John Alford 1696 MD - 1748 VA.   [A-29] [A-62]
The date and place of John's birth is an estimate, but the death is supported by his will. While he had four sons and two daughters, the branch extends through only three of the sons. This is a Virginia branch that spread out to the west and southwest, and some of this branch intermarried with the descendants of John Alford 1735 Ireland (see below) - known as Irish John. (Jan 30 2010) William A. Alford, a descendant of this John Alford, published a work in the 1940s. Part I was reprinted in AAFA ACTION #62, Fall 2003, and repeated in AAFA ACTION #74, Fall 2006.
