MICHIGAN OBITUARIES OF ALFORDS
AND SPELLING VARIATIONS
Obituaries are listed alphabetically by FIRST name. Included
are people whose last name, maiden name, or married name is Alford or a
spelling variation: Alfred, Alvord, Allford, Halford, Hallford, Holford, etc.
The name of the newspaper (or other source) and place and
date of publication follow the name of the deceased. If we published the
obituary in AAFA ACTION, the issue is noted.
The Alford American Family Association (AAFA) usually adds
notes for each obituary, including Social Security Death Index (SSDI) data,
relationship of the deceased to other Alfords, and lineages. However, in the
interest of making the obituaries available online, we did not add notes to
most of these Michigan obituaries. We will add to AAFA
NOTES as time permits.
Where lineages are included (Alford unless otherwise stated),
the format is: Name, year of birth, state or country of birth.
Obituaries of AAFA members and their spouses are also
included on the AAFA Member
Memorials web page and may include more information.
We welcome corrections and additional information. If you
have an obituary from this state that is not included here, please share it
with us!

ELIZA JANE ALFORD MUSSELMAN

Source unknown—found in a scrapbook at the library in
Otsego, Allegan Co., MI
_____, MI—_____ February 1901
Mrs. John Musselman died at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Horace Root, of Alamo [Kalamazoo Co.], [Monday] February 25,
[1901] after an illness of nearly two years, aged 70 years, 3 months and 14
days.
Jane E. Alford was born in Eromosa Twp, Halton
Co, Ontario, November 11, 1830, and came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
Alford, to Alamo in 1838, and, with the exception of ten years that she resided
in Dowagiac [Cass Co.] she has resided in Kalamazoo Co.
March 29, 1850 she was married to John
Musselman, who survives her. To them were born five sons and 3 daughters. The
three oldest boys died in infancy. One daughter, Flora Caldwell, died 15 years
ago [about 1886]. There are four children living, Daniel of Tato [sic—Toto,
Starke Co.], Ind., William of Otsego, Mrs. Josephine Root of Alamo, and Mrs.
Marion Ulam of Paw Paw. She also leaves eleven grand children, an aged mother,
one brother and three sisters.
She was the oldest of a large family of children
[14] and, coming here in an early day could tell many interesting stories of
her pioneer life. Her father who was a patriot soldier (and son of a
Revolutionary soldier) in the war of 1812, died in 1849 leaving his wife alone
to bear the burden of rearing their children.
The funeral services were held at her late home
last week Wednesday.... Burial was made in Alamo cemetery [Greenbauer (Green
Bower in Alamo at FindAGrave.com)] near her old home. The bearers were three
grandsons and a nephew.
It seems a matter of interest to many that a
person as old as Mrs. Musselman at her death should have a mother living. Mrs.
Musselman’s mother was born in Ireland of Scotch parents, her father, Patrick
McCullough, being a physician. They came to America when she was 12 years old
and two years later she was married to Wm. Alford, twice her age, and until his
death 20 years later they lived happily. Several years after his death she
married John Stewart, who died 12 years ago. She now resides with her son, Wm.
Alford.
AAFA NOTES: See
the obituaries of her mother, Martha Ann McCullough Alford Stewart; and her siblings
Abigail Hannah Alford Lewis and William Henry Harrison Alford in this
compilation.
The obituary of her husband:

Otsego, Allegan Co., MI—Thursday,
31 December 1903
John Albert Musselman died
at Allegan last Saturday and his remains were brought to the home of his son,
William, in this village where the funeral was held Tuesday afternoon.... Interment
was made in Alamo. The deceased was born November 17, 1824, in Cayuga Co, New
York, his age at death being 79 years, 1 month, and 9 days. At age 25, [March
29, 1850] he married Miss [Eliza] Jane Alford of Alamo. Eight children were
born to them of whom four survive: Daniel Musselman of Toto, Indiana [Starke
Co], William of Otsego, Mrs. Josephine [Horace] Root of Kalamazoo and Mrs.
Minnie [Frank] Ulan [Ulam] of Mattawan. Besides his children he leaves two
brothers and one sister, of these Jacob and Mathew (Merritt) Musselman reside
in Plainwell and Mrs. Margaret [Michael] Smith at St. Joseph.
In February of 1883 he
united with the Methodist church at West Oshtemo, and retained his membership
there until his death.
For several years Mr.
Musselman had been blind and for the last few weeks of his life was entirely
helpless from a stroke of paralysis.

LULU ALFORD PLATT
MUSKEGON CHRONICLE
Muskegon, Muskegon Co., M—Tuesday, 14 November 1905
Mrs. Lulu Alford Platt died at 11:05 o’clock
this morning at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank B. Alford, 133
Ottawa street, after an illness of two weeks.
She returned to Muskegon from Grand Rapids, in
company with her father, October 26. She was then in poor health, and owing to
great nervous strain under which she had be suffering was apparently on the
verge of nervous prostration. She was taken ill shortly afterward and was
attended for several days by Dr. P.A. Quick.
She seemed then to be recovering and Dr. Quick
was not called again until yesterday. He called again this morning and found
Mrs. Platt’s condition then so critical that he asked Dr. F.W. Garber in
consultation, but nothing could then be done for the relief of the patient.
Mrs. Platt was born in Muskegon October 1, 1885,
and had lived here all her life until June, 1904, when she went to Grand
Rapids, where she was employed in the card and index department of the Fred
Macey company. She had attended the public schools of this city, leaving school
after finishing the eighth grade four years ago.
At Grand Rapids she was married March 29, 1905,
to Henry Platt, who proved to be unworthy of her, and because of his bad
conduct and his neglect of her Mrs. Platt suffered extremely before returning
to Muskegon.
There seems to be little doubt that it was
because of her husband’s ill treatment and neglect that Mrs. Platt’s health
became so shattered she was unable to recover from the illness that attacked
her shortly after her return to Muskegon.
AAFA
NOTES: On the 1900 census in Muskegon, Muskegon Co., MI, Lulu, age
14 born Oct 1885 in MI, is living with her parents Frank B. Alford, age 43 born

KALAMAZOO GAZETTE
Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., MI—30 April 1909
Mrs. Martha Alford Stewart died April 19th at
the residence of her daughter, Mrs. C.C. Gunn, of Mattawan, aged 93 years and
three days. Mrs. Stewart was born in Ireland, April 16, 1816, the daughter of
Dr. and Mrs. Patrick McCullough. She came to Canada with her parents in 1828.
Two years later she was married to William Alford an American soldier and in
1838 with her husband she came west, locating in Alamo where they underwent all
the hardships of pioneer life. To them were born fourteen children, seven of
whom reached their majority. In 1849 her husband died and three years later she
was married to John W. Stewart, a man of strong religious character and well
known throughout Kalamazoo county whom the she survived twenty-one years.
A daughter living only a few months blessed this
union. Mrs. Stewart lived on the farm which was bought from the government
until 1860 when she sold it and bought a farm in Oshtemo. She was the last of
the old pioneers of Alamo. She began to lose her eyesight as well as her
hearing three years ago. And as she had not been able to walk without aid for
eight years life was only enjoyed by knowing that she was with her loved ones
and tenderly cared for. Her mind was clear and she could repeat many poems,
some of which she learned in childhood days. She is survived by four children,
Mrs. Abbie Lewis, Fife Lake, Mich.; Mrs. Anna Phillips and William Alford of
Texas [Kalamazoo Co.], and Mrs. C.C. Gunn of Mattawan.
The funeral services were held at West Oshtemo
church and were conducted by Rev. I Bates of Paw Paw and Rev Henry Boynton of
Oshtemo. The pallbearers were six of her grandchildren, William Lewis of
Oshtemo; William Gunn of Watervliet; George Gunn of Oshtemo; Wallace Lewis of
Grand Rapids; Clyde Alford of Texas [Kalamazoo Co.], and Irwin Gunn of Mattawan.
The interment was in the Northeast Alamo cemetery, beside the husband of her
youth and close to all of her children with the exception of one, George
Alford, who has slept in a soldier’s grave in the sunny southland for more than
40 years.
Mrs. Stewart is survived by ninety-six
descendants, four children, twenty-two grandchildren, fifty-eight great grandchildren
and twelve great-great-grandchildren, making five generations. There were
several beautiful floral offerings. The music was by Miss Elsie Abbott, Mrs.
Ella Wright and Messrs. Van Auken and Anson.
In another
article, source unknown:
Martha Alford Stewart was born in Tallenanus,
Monahan county, Providence of Ulster, Ireland, April 16, 1816 and died April
19, 1909, aged 93 years and 3 days. Deceased had become nearly blind and was
very deaf but otherwise retained her faculties to a remarkable degree. Only the
evening before she was taken ill she entertained her great-grandson who was
spending his vacation at his grandparents with stories of her voyage across the
Atlantic in 1828.
When scarcely 14 years of age she was united in
marriage to William Alford, a soldier of the war of 1812, and a member of a New
York regiment. To them were born fourteen children. In 1838 they came to
Michigan and settled in Alamo, where they endured all the privations of pioneer
life.
In 1849 her husband died and three years later
she was married to John W. Stewart, a man well known to older residents here,
and to them was born one child which only lived a few months. Deceased is
survived by one son and three daughters, William Alford, Mrs. Abbie Lewis, Mrs.
Annie Phillips, and Mrs. Helen Gunn; 22 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren
and 12 great-great-grandchildren, a total of 96 living descendants.
Deceased had always lived a strenuous life until
about eight years ago and enforced idleness grew monotonous, but being fond of
reading, she spent her time in that way until her sight failed; then she lived
in the past. Her greatest pleasure was in knowing she was with her children and
a hope of soon meeting with loved ones on the other side....

DEATH BREAKS FIVE GENERATIONS
At the time of her death, April 19, Mrs. Martha
Alford Stewart was one of the oldest pioneers of Kalamazoo county. She was 93
years when she passed away and had lived in Alamo, her old home, for many
years. Through she had been failing in health, her mind even at the time of her
death was very clear and nothing delighted her more than to recite some of the
poems she had learned in childhood.
She was born in Ireland and came to America when
she was eight years old. She had lived the greater part of her life in the west.
Ninety-six descendants survive her, among which are four children, Mrs. Abbie
Lewis, Fife Lake, Mich.; Mrs. Anna Phillips and William Alford of Texas
[Kalamazoo Co.], and Mrs. C.C. Gunn of Mattawan, twenty grandchildren,
fifty-eight great grand children, and twelve great great grand grandchildren.
Five generations are shown in the picture, Mrs.
Stewart being one.

From Portrait and Biographical
Record of Kalamazoo, Allegan and Van Buren Counties, Michigan (Chicago:
Chapman Bros., 1892), pp. 838, 841, in biographical sketch of Conrad
Christopher Gunn, second husband of William and Martha’s daughter Helen
Caroline Alford:
Her grandfather participated in the
Revolutionary War. A fife that was played by him in the battle of Yorktown and
at the surrender of Cornwallis, and afterward by his son William Alford, in the
War of 1812, is in the possession of the family. The father of Mrs. Gunn was
married at the age of twenty-nine years, in Canada, having moved there soon
after the War of 1812. He lived in Guelph, Ontario, but at the time of the
Rebellion in Canada, not wishing to fight for or against his own country, sold
his property and came to Michigan, taking up land in Alamo Township, in 1837, where
he resided until his death, which occurred in 1849. His good wife is still
living and makes her home with her son in Texas Township. She bore her husband
fourteen children and was again married in 1852 and became the mother of one
child.

ROBERT ALFORD
DETROIT NEWS
Detroit, Wayne Co., MI—12 November 2000
Robert Alford offered helping hand
WESTLAND—If members of the Dearborn Country Club are too
young to remember Robert Alford, all they need to do is look for a sprawling
tree between the locker room and first tee. It was planted in his honor when he
retired from the club 23 years ago.
As head of the locker room staff, Mr. Alford
distributed more than just soap and towels—he doled out wisdom and stuck around
long enough to watch it blossom.
Mr. Alford died of heart failure Thursday, Nov.
9, 2000, at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He was 88 and lived in Westland.
“Back in the old days,” recalled his son Kirk, “the
members’ kids were pretty much left to their own devices and every now and then
he’d have to pull them aside and say: ‘You’ve got to grow up,’ or ‘Don’t be
playing pranks. If you enjoy this facility, then don’t ruin it for your father.’
“Members would come back and thank him for
helping raise their children. Sometimes the kids would come back when they had
grown up and give him a hug and just say thanks for the guidance. They
appreciated his hand in it.”
After 30 years at the country club, Mr. Alford
retired in 1977. He took tremendous pride in tending to his west-side Detroit
home and his vegetable garden. He lived there for 40 years and moved to a
senior citizens’ complex in Westland in 1998.
In addition to his son, survivors include three
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services, which are being handled by the James
H. Cole Funeral Home in Detroit, are scheduled for Wednesday at the St. Stephen
AME Church, 6000 John E. Hunter Dr., Detroit. Burial will be at Roseland Park
Cemetery in Berkley.
