Represented here are most of the
obituaries we currently have for “Alfords” who died in Ohio. As time permits,
we will add obituaries that we previously published and periodically post updates,
including newly acquired obituaries and additional “AAFA NOTES. As always, we
welcome information you might have on these or any other “Alfords” who died in
Ohio.
OHIO OBITUARIES OF ALFORDS
AND SPELLING VARIATIONS
Obituaries are listed alphabetically by FIRST name. Included
are people whose last name, maiden name, or married name is Alford or a
spelling variation: Alfred, Alvord, Allford, Halford, Hallford, Holford, etc.
The name of the newspaper (or other source) and place and
date of publication follow the name of the deceased. If we published the
obituary in AAFA ACTION, the issue is noted.
The Alford American Family Association (AAFA) usually adds
notes for each obituary, including Social Security Death Index (SSDI) data,
relationship of the deceased to other Alfords, and lineages. However, in the
interest of making the obituaries available online, we did not add notes to
most of these Ohio obituaries. We will add to AAFA NOTES as time permits.
Where lineages are included (Alford unless otherwise stated),
the format is: Name, year of birth, state or country of birth.
Obituaries of AAFA members and their spouses are also
included on the AAFA Member
Memorials web page and may include more information.
We welcome corrections and additional information. If you
have an obituary from this state that is not included here, please share it
with us!

Funeral Service
Shaker Heights, OH—_____ February 2010
Born in Lorain on Aug. 15, 1912
Departed on Feb. 6, 2010 and resided in Pepper Pike, OH
Mollie Alfred, RN, age 97, (nee Amalia Leona
Bombach), was born in Lorain, Ohio and had most of her schooling in Cleveland,
OH. Her High School years were spent at Villa Angela High School, following
which she trained and received her Registered Nursing degree at Saint Vincent
Charity Hospital of Cleveland. At St. Vincent's, where she worked for a few
years, she was known as "The Sweetheart of Charity Hospital." She
became married and had a daughter, Patricia, but this was a short marriage and
Mollie returned to work as a nurse at University Hospitals of Cleveland while
she and Pat lived with Pat's sister in Euclid, OH.
While working at University Hospitals, she
became one of the first nurses to work under the new concept of recovery rooms
where patients were taken following surgery. It was at this time, that she met
Dr. Karl S. Alfred, who was the only orthopedic surgery resident there in early
1949. Karl had come to Cleveland from New Jersey for his training and had
experienced family problems. His wife, Marjorie, had to be institutionalized
after bearing two sons and was told that she would never be able to raise a
family. The boys, Richard and Peter, were four and five years old and under the
care of Karl's mother in Summit, NJ. Friendship soon turned into love and at
the completion of his residency in July of l950, Karl was asked to join an
orthopedic surgeon in Lansing, Michigan. He drove to Lansing and stayed with
the surgeon for a few days but could not practice until he had obtained a
Michigan license. During this time, Mollie came and spent a couple of days so
she could meet the family that was to take Karl in as a partner. After Mollie
returned to Cleveland, the Michigan doctor made his feelings known that he did
not approve of Karl's choice of a bride. This was not the news that Karl wanted
to hear and he told the doctor that he was returning to Cleveland. After many
hours of pleading and a sleepless night, Karl left Michigan, but still on
friendly terms.
After returning to Cleveland, Karl rented a
small apartment off Euclid Avenue, close to University Hospitals. His doctor
friends welcomed him back and Dr. Maxwell Harbin, who had been his mentor, saw
to it that Karl was given a staff position at University Hospitals. With no
funds and no income, finding office space was almost impossible. However, Dr.
Clarence Heyman offered the use of his office and secretary in the Carnegie
Medical Building at East 105th and Carnegie. At that time, the address was
known as the best medical address between New York and Chicago and continued to
be for many years. Many of the doctors from University Hospitals had offices
there and that became a source of referrals. Karl also spent over twenty hours
a week at the Veterans Administration offices in downtown Cleveland, so there
was a little source of income.
After being in Dr. Heyman's office for eighteen
months, there was a sudden vacancy in the Carnegie Medical Building and Dr.
Heyman and the other doctors in the building saw to it that the space was
awarded to Karl. Dr. Alfred had enough income at the time to staff the office
and Mollie recommended an acquaintance of hers from the same floor as the
recovery room where she worked. Marjorie Aldridge was the ward secretary on one
of the private floors and she became Dr. Alfred's secretary for the next thirty
years.
Karl's boys, Dick and Peter, were still under
his mother's care in New Jersey, which was a severe burden to her, though she
carried on without a complaint. Molly and Karl could not get married until his
divorce could be obtained. Fortunately Karl's mother-in-law, Rose Lincoln, was
kind enough to come to Cleveland and at the court hearing, she urged that the
divorce be granted. The divorce was granted in June of 1951.
Now they needed to find a home and were
fortunate to rent a home on Lamberton Road in Cleveland Heights, close to
University Hospitals and The Carnegie Medical Building. Now it was time to get
married and Mollie and Karl approached the clergy at St. Paul's Episcopal
Church in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. They met with the Reverend John O'Hear, who
was pleasantly sympathetic, but he did not think he could perform the ceremony.
Rev. O'Hear referred the couple to his good friend The Rev. Miles Krumbine of
Plymouth Church of Shaker Heights, and told them that he would be happy to have
them as members at St. Paul's after they were married.
Karl and Mollie were married on July 26th, 1951,
by Rev. Krumbine. Present were Dr. Heyman, matron of honor, "Jackie"
Evans, best man plastic surgeon Clifford Kiehm, Mollie's daughter, Patricia,
almost ten years old, and a few friends. Jackie was the wife of Dr. Wayne
Evans, a dentist who had been a shipmate of Karl's aboard the USS Estes AGC12,
during World War II and who had been called back to active duty during the
Korean Conflict. They became lifelong friends with Mollie and Karl. A lunch was
relished at the Alcazar Hotel in Cleveland Heights and the couple took off for
four days at Niagara Falls.
Now when Mollie, Karl and Patricia were settled
on Lamberton Road in Cleveland Heights, it was time to get Karl's boys, Dick
and Peter, to Cleveland before school started. About a month later they were
boarded on a train in Summit, New Jersey. That was the Lackawanna Railroad
which took them to Buffalo, New York, where the car they were on was hooked up to
the Nickel Plate line which took them on to Cleveland. The railroad personnel
took very good care of them and they were let off at the station in East
Cleveland later that evening. The family was now complete. All these children
attended Fairfax School on Lee Road, a short walk from Lamberton Road. Karl and
Mollie joined St. Paul's Episcopal Church and the entire family enjoyed suppers
and other activities at St. Paul's.
Karl's practice took off well and after a year
and a half, they were able to purchase a home on Yellowstone Road in Cleveland
Heights, where the boys attended Noble School and Pat went to Monticello Junior
High, and later to Cleveland Heights High.
The family enjoyed fifteen years on Yellowstone
Road before Mollie and Karl moved further out into the suburbs. A good real
estate friend, Vera Evans, guided them to Darling & Darling who showed them
a home on Brandywood Drive in Pepper Pike, Ohio. Many homes were being built
and several lots were available. Karl and Mollie picked the lot they wanted and
their home was completed in 1968.
During the years when the children were growing
up, they went on to different colleges, got married and had children. Mollie
was an excellent mother, a wonderful wife, grandmother and great grandmother.
She enjoyed traveling the world, attending meetings with her physician husband
and making yearly visits to Norway where Karl's mother had retired a couple of
years after their wedding. She loved her home and the annual visits of the clan
every Labor Day weekend until the end.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday February
27th at 10:30 am in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 2747 Fairmount Blvd.,
Cleveland Hts., OH. Brown-Forward Service 216 752-1200.

Game developers stage auctions for ailing peer
Eleven months ago, Jeremy Allford was diagnosed
with an inoperable brain tumor.
An early pioneer of the online gaming and
hardware industry as well as co-founder of Web site AGN3D, Allford has been
forced to discontinue full-time work on the site because of chemotherapy
treatments.
Now the tight-knit electronic games industry is
rallying to his side.
Allford, a 28-year-old with a wife and two young
children, has no life insurance and a mountain of medical bills. To help offset
some of the financial burden, several gaming software and hardware-related
sites and companies are banding together to raise funds for the Columbus, Ohio,
family....
Allford said he's amazed at the support he's
received from the gaming community and notes it's been such a benefit to his
family.
Initially, Allford was given three months to
live, but he has managed to beat the odds to date. The glioblastoma tumor,
which encompasses 25 percent of his brain, has affected his walking, eyesight
and memory, he said.
"I have good days and bad days. Sometimes I
may have a good week with just one bad day. Other weeks, it may be bad with
just one good day," said Allford, recalling the days when he would work
12-hour stretches.
He added he takes advantage of the good days to
write gaming-related news for AGN3D and keep friends, family and acquaintances posted
on his health.

the Rose Hill Mausoleum....
AAFA
NOTES: SSDI records confirm the birth and death dates of Jewel M.
Hayes (SS# issued in OH), last residence Redondo Beach, Los Angeles Co., CA.
It is possible that Jewel is the widow of a
descendant of the Campbell Co. KY Alfords. An Alvin Alford (born 1902, died Feb
1961, according to SSDI) was issued a SS# in OH. In 1900, an Alvin Alford (born
1871) and wife Ida E. _____ of the Campbell Co. KY Alfords had two children:
Raymond (born Jan 1895 KY) and Lottie (born 1897 KY). They are missing from the
KY census thereafter. In 1920, Butler Co. OH, there is a family with three
Alford step-children of Richard Nelson—Raymond (born 1895 KY), Lottie (born
1897 KY) and Elmore (born 1902 KY). I think this Elmore is really Alvin Elmer
Alford who married Jewel M. Howard in 1927, in Hamilton, Butler Co. Ohio. Ida
E. Alford must have married Richard Nelson some time before 1920. A Ray Alford,
born Jan 17 1895 died July 1968 in Butler Co. OH, also according to the SSDI.
This seems to have been Alvin’s elder brother.

JOSEPH SAVAGE ALFORD, JR.
Father of Joseph Savage Alford III AAFA #0102
[Joseph
died in New Orleans, but he spent most of his adult life in OH, so we are also including
his obituary here.]
THE TIMES-PICAYUNE
New Orleans, LA—14 September 2004
Published in AAFA ACTION, Fall 2004
Alford Joseph S. Alford, Chief “Jet Engine”
Design Engineer, 93, formerly of Cincinnati, passed away in his Metairie home
on Sept. 5, 2004. He was internationally known as a major technical leader,
inventor and teacher in the thermodynamic and mechanical design of literally
every GE aircraft gas turbine developed from the early 1940s until the end of
the century. During his career he received about 30 U.S. patents. He also
presented over thirty technical papers, four of which won major awards from professional
societies.
He was born on June 11, 1911 in Utah to Joseph
Alford and Christine Dick. After growing up in his beloved Colorado mountains,
he earned a Mechanical Engineering degree from the U. of Colorado. In 1935 he
joined General Electric to begin a 66 year career. This started with the
completion of advanced engineering courses and then assignments with steam
turbines in Lynn Massachusetts. In 1940 his work shifted to aircraft gas
turbines, which then dominated the rest of his career, most of which occurred
at the GE Evendale (Cincinnati) plant. Joseph Alford was a Fellow of the
American Society of Mechanical Engineers and held prestigious titles with
several other professional organizations.
In 1974, he was honored with the University of
Colorado Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Award in Research and Invention. In
1976, he was honored as the first recipient of General Electric’s Charles P.
Steinmetz Award in the Aircraft Engines group. He was also among the first to
be inducted into the General Electric Hall of Fame. He was chosen to represent
GE at a Cincinnati Reds baseball game in Riverfront Stadium and throw out the
ceremonial first pitch to Johnny Bench.
After retiring at age 65, he returned to work at
GE the next day as a consultant and continued working until age 90. A special
moment at his 90th birthday party was the reading of a personal letter
addressed to him from then GE CEO, Jack Welch. Joe Alford was among the lucky
few whose vocation was also his avocation and his lifetime was largely spent
doing what he loved most -solving engineering problems. He would probably have
said the same thing about his life that Thomas Edison said about his: “I never
did a day’s work in my life. It was all fun.”
On the occasion marking his sixth decade working
for General Electric he said: “Working for the company for 60 years has been a
rewarding career and has given me enduring satisfaction. People may ask, ‘Why
doesn’t this old man get a rocking chair, go down to Florida and sit on the
veranda?’ But if you really, truly like engineering, it’s the best show in
town.”
He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 62
years, Mary Alford of Metairie, LA., his son Joseph Alford of Indianapolis,
daughters Christine Pollock and Elizabeth Alford of New Orleans, nephew Dick
Alford of Florida, 6 grandchildren (Michael, David, Randy, Amy, Lisa, and
Anne-Lise) and 4 great grandchildren.
A private family memorial service is planned for
a later date.... Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

THE ENQUIRER
Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH—Tuesday, 14 September 2004
Joseph Alford, engineer at GE
93-year-old was company ‘legend’
By Rebecca Goodman, Enquirer staff writer
WYOMING [Hamilton Co.]—Joseph S. Alford, an engineer involved
with jet engine development at GE Aircraft Engines for nearly seven decades,
died Sept. 5 at his home in New Orleans. He was 93.
Mr. Alford was a legend at GE, according to Rick
Kennedy, the company’s media relations director. “People like Joe Alford were
part of the technology advances that took place in the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s”
that enabled GE to become what it is today.
Mr. Alford continued consulting and mentoring
other GE engineers after his retirement. He worked at GE for 66 years. “Joe basically
was the one who taught some of these people the ropes,” Kennedy said. “He was
the engineer’s engineer. If you look at all the main engineers who have come
through this business, they all were touched by Joe Alford.”
Mike Benzakein, general manager of advanced
engineering at GE, concurred, saying, “Joe was really a super engineer. I knew
of him before I came here. He was always a tremendous resource as an adviser
and as a consultant.”
Mr. Alford was involved in the “thermodynamic
and mechanical design of literally every GE aircraft gas turbine developed from
the early 1940s until the end of the century,” said his son, Joseph S. Alford
Jr. of Indianapolis.
After he retired in 1976, he returned to GE the
next day as a consultant and worked as such until he was 90....
Mr. Alford was still spending afternoons at GE
until a couple of years ago. He sat in on meetings and chimed in with sage
advice.
“Most of the time he was ahead of me in
understanding what the problem was and what the solution would be,” Benzakein
said. “Joe was definitely one of the key people.”
Mr. Alford was born in 1911 in Mercur [Tooele
Co.], Utah, near Salt Lake City, and raised in Crested Butte [Gunnison Co.],
Colo. He went to work for GE right after graduating with honors with a degree
in mechanical engineering from the University of Colorado in 1934.
He enrolled in the company’s three-year advanced
engineering course, then went to work in the steam research section of the
Turbine Division in Lynn, Mass. He was transferred to the Supercharger Division
(forerunner of the Aircraft Engine Group) a few months after the United States
entered World War II.
Mr. Alford was responsible for organizing and
supervising engineering education within the division and for designing turbo-superchargers.
He was later involved in performance analysis of aircraft powered with gas
turbines and for establishing the jet engine development program.
He was transferred to the Evendale plant around
1950.
Mr. Alford presented more than 30 professional
papers and had about 30 patents related to turbo-superchargers or gas turbines.
He was the first recipient of GE’s Charles P.
Steinmetz Award in the Aircraft Engines group and was the first to be inducted
into the GE Hall of Fame.
He was named engineer of the year by the
Technical and Scientific Societies Council of Cincinnati in 1965 and received
the Herbert Akroyd Stuart Memorial Award in 1961 from the Royal Aeronautical
Society and the Mechanical Engineers Gas Turbine Award in 1965 from the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers.
He and his wife, Mary, moved to New Orleans in

ASME
NEWS
American Society of Mechanical Engineers
October 2004
An engineer at GE for 66 years, ASME Fellow dies
Joseph S. Alford, a chief Jet Engine Design
Engineer at GE, died in his New Orleans home on Sept. 5. He was 93.
He was internationally known as a major
technical leader, inventor and teacher in the thermodynamic and mechanical
design of literally every GE aircraft gas turbine developed from the early
1940s until the end of the century. During his career, Alford received about 30
U.S. patents. He also presented more than 30 technical papers, four of which
won major awards from professional societies.
Alford was born June 11, 1911 in Utah and grew
up the Colorado mountains. He earned a mechanical engineering degree from the
University of Colorado. In 1935, he joined General Electric, starting what
would become a 66-year career. In the beginning, he completed advanced
engineering courses and worked on steam turbines in Lynn, Mass.
In 1940, his work shifted to aircraft gas
turbines, which then dominated the rest of his career, most of which occurred
at the GE Evendale plant, located in Cincinnati.
Joseph Alford was a Fellow of the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers and held prestigious titles with several other
professional organizations. In 1974, he was honored with the University of
Colorado Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Award in Research and Invention.
In 1976, he was honored as the first recipient
of General Electric’s Charles P. Steinmetz Award in the Aircraft Engines group.
He was also among the first to be inducted into the General Electric Hall of
Fame. He was chosen to represent GE at a Cincinnati Reds baseball game in
Riverfront Stadium and throw out the ceremonial first pitch to Johnny Bench.
After retiring at age 65, he returned to work at
GE the next day as a consultant and continued working until age 90. A special
moment at his 90th birthday party was the reading of a personal letter
addressed to him from then GE CEO, Jack Welch.
Joe Alford was among the lucky few whose
vocation was also his avocation and his lifetime was largely spent doing what
he loved most—solving engineering problems. He would probably have said the
same thing about his life that Thomas Edison said about his: “I never did a
day’s work in my life. It was all fun.”
On the occasion marking his sixth decade working
for General Electric he said: “Working for the company for 60 years has been a
rewarding career and has given me enduring satisfaction. People may ask, ‘Why
doesn’t this old man get a rocking chair, go down to Florida and sit on the
veranda?’ But if you really, truly like engineering, it’s the best show in
town.”
He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years,
Mary, his son Joseph Alford of Indianapolis, daughters Christine Pollock and
Elizabeth Alford of New Orleans, nephew Dick Alford of Florida, 6 grandchildren
and 4 great grandchildren.
A private family memorial service was
planned....

Relatives grieve victim of shooting
One man killed, his brother wounded in attack as they drove
home from club
By: Lawrence Budd Staff Writer
DAYTON—Mario Lawhorn yearned for his cousin, Maurice N.
Alford Jr., on Monday, Feb. 25, as he struggled to deal with the slaying of his
relative.
Alford, 26, of Dayton, died in a drive-by
shooting about 4 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, on the Third Street Bridge near Edwin C.
Moses Boulevard.
"I wish he was here," Lawhorn, 21,
said as he and other family members grieved at Lawhorn's home in Dayton. Alford
lived there on and off since returning to the area from Jackson, Mich. "He
looked out for me like a little brother. He told me one day I would make
it," Lawhorn said.
The victim's brother, Antonio Alford, 25, shot
several times in the arm and torso, has been released from Miami Valley
Hospital.
Police were still trying to determine why
someone would open fire on the car the brothers were in as they drove home from
Club Cream, 80 N. Main St., in Dayton.
The Alfords were driving across the bridge when
another car overtook and passed them on the driver's side. Someone in that car
fired several times into the car the Alfords were in.
Dayton police Sgt. Gary White said the shooter
or shooters were in a dark-colored car, but little other information was
available as to who they were or why the shooting occurred.
It was Dayton's sixth homicide of 2008 — one
more than at this time a year ago, according to Dayton police.
"He was my big brother. I'm going to miss
him dearly," said Alford 's sister, DeShonda Alford, 23. "Whoever did
this, please turn yourself in."
MauriceAlford also leaves to mourn four
children, ages 2 months to 3 years, from three women, family members said.
"They were asking for their daddy last
night," an aunt, Sarah Lawhorn, said Monday.
"What can I tell 'em? They're too young to
understand."
In May 2005, MauriceAlford completed probation
from a case in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court involving possession of
less than a gram of crack cocaine.

MELBA D. GREGORY BRANT ALFORD
NORWALK REFLECTOR
Norwalk, Huron Co., OH—Friday, 9 April 2010
June 12, 1944 - April 6, 2010
NORWALK—Proud to have been a lifelong resident of Norwalk,
Melba knocked on heaven's door this day. She was quick to recognize God's hand
in the blessings of her life, she knew Jesus as her Savior.
Melba was the fourth of nine children born to
the late John and Ruth Gregory, where life on South Norwalk Road was spent
tending the family garden, wandering the fields with younger sisters and
brothers in tow, making dandelion necklaces, sledding down the hill behind the
barn on a pushed-down baby buggy, laying on her back making animals out of
clouds.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Evelyn
Barnes, and brother, Mic Gregory.
Surviving are Sonya Vondrak, Norwalk; Huntz
(Mary) Gregory, Norwalk; Rita (Larry) Mercer, Montpelier; Anna (Del) Bristol,
Norwalk; Gregg Gregory, Sedona, Arizona; and Jeanine Gentry, Norwalk.
Melba's greatest joy was found in her three
children: Ann-Marie Kerr, Bellevue, John Brant (Johnnie my boy!), Jodi Nickoli,
Norwalk, and Scott Brant, Norwalk.
Her life was further enriched with the arrival
of her grandchildren: Madison Brant, Corey Henning and Katelyn Henning, Aledia
Brant and baby Lenah Brant. Love for the generations continued with the
addition of great grandchildren: Corey's son, Leelan, who would hug his
great-grandmother and say, "I wush my GG", and Katelyn's daughter,
Sevannah Hartley.
Husbands Gerry Brant and James Alford preceded
her in death. Melba was a special Aunt to Lynn Chapin, Brian and Eric Maestas;
as well as a caring niece to Catherine Gregory and Eugene and Elsie Gamble.
Step-children, Doug (Crystal) Alford and the late Sherrie Smilie [sic—Smillie]
and families were welcome additions to her life.
Melba had a ready wit and brought gales of
laughter with her spot-on one-liners. She loved to speak "pig-latin"
and laughed when looks of consternation passed over someone's face. If there

Elisha Stevens, who passed away in 1925. Edward Cook, whom she later married,
died in 1928.
Mrs. Cook is survived by four children. One
daughter, Mrs. Perry Rayle, formerly of Deshler, preceded her in death. Those

Judge John Matthews
Dear Sir:
I hereby consent to the marriage
of my ward, Sarah Holford, to Elisha Stevens of Martinsville, Ohio.
I am, Respectfully, R.E. Doan
In the 1870 census for
Clinton County, Ohio, Robert E. Doan was an attorney in Wilmington, Ohio. He owned
a farm in Union Township. His property was valued at $35,000, which was a
king's ransom at that time, so he was very wealthy. In 1870, Sarah Holford was
not living with him.
In the 1870 census for
Clinton County, Ohio, Farmers Station, Jefferson Township, Dwelling 148, Family
151, there was a Sarah Halford, 17, born in Ohio, who was a domestic servant in
the house. The head of household was James Halford, 37, white male, farm
laborer, born in Ohio; the wife was Matilda Halford, 38, born in Ohio, and the
children were Hiram, 9, Marshall, 7, Elenore, 5, Harriett, 2, and Milsenn
(sic), 10 months. Same Sarah?
According to the Ohio
Historical Society on-line death index, Elisha Stevens died in Clinton County
on November 12, 1925 (Volume Number: 4873 Certificate Number: 61556).
On March 21, 1997,
Carolyn (Young) and James Rebar visited Findlay, Ohio, to find more information
on the death of Elisha Stevens. At the city library, they were shown an index
of names from the city newspaper, and Elisha Stevens did not have an obituary
written after his death. The Hancock county probate court building, directly
behind the courthouse, also had no record of Elisha Stevens' death, and the
Department of Health, located in the Hancock county municipal building next
door, also had no record of his demise. The Health department was able to
provide the location of the graves of Elisha Stevens and Sarah Ellen (Halford)
Stevens in Maple Grove Cemetery -- Section 28, Lot 70, Grave 1 (Elisha) and
Grave 2 (Sarah). The Rebars were unable to find the grave, so Carolyn Rebar
went to the cemetery administration building for a map; the clerk verified the
location of the graves and showed exactly where the graves are located. Another
search revealed that no marker had ever been placed on the graves.
