MARY BETH WILLIS ALFORD

Cheyenne, Laramie Co., WY—Monday, 11 March 2002

 

            Mary Beth Alford, 76, of Cheyenne died March 9 at United Medical Center West.

            She was born Oct 10, 1925, in Topeka, Kan., and had lived in Cheyenne for five years.

            Mrs. Alford was a foster grandmother for the Foster Grandparent Program at numerous elementary schools in Cheyenne.

            She was a member of Northwoods Presbyterian Church.

            Mrs. Alford is survived by four sons, David Alford of Ona, W.Va., Barry Alford of Lancaster, Texas, and Michael Alford and Richard Alford Jr., both of Cheyenne; two daughters, Priscilla Alford and Joy McCabe, both of Cheyenne; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

            She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Alford Sr., on March 21, 1995; parents, Basil and Udah Willis; and a daughter, Lisa Alford.

            Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes.... Interment will be in West Virginia....

 

AAFA NOTES: SSDI records confirm the birth and death dates of Mary Beth Alford (SS #523-24-3279 issued in CO). Inexplicably, her last residence is listed as Gallup, McKinley Co., NM.

            Her husband Richard is listed in SSDI records [#297-20-0269 issued in OH] as Richard H. Alford, b. 3 March 1924 and d. 20 March 1995. His last residence was Gallup, McKinley Co., NM.

            Lunsford Cemetery in Mason Co., WV [www.rootsweb.com/~wvcabell/cemetery/lunsford.html] is on the border of Cabell Co. and Mason Co., with most of the people buried there having lived in Cabell Co., according to the cemetery website. A number of Alfords are buried there, including Richard and Mary Beth, Richard’s parents, and some of his siblings. They share a gravestone, and apparently Mary Beth was not yet deceased when the cemetery was surveyed because only her birth date is listed. Richard’s gravestone says:

            Richard Hallie Alford, a hydrology engineer, was b. in Mason Co., WV, the son of Early Wine Alford and Missouri Ann Edmonds.

            Early Wine Alford was b. 8 Jan 1895 in Lincoln Co., WV, the son of Milton E. Alford and Emma Hager. They had 14 children. Early d. 11 Nov 1976 in Huntington, Cabell Co., WV, and is buried in Lunsford Cemetery.

            Milton Eli Alford, born 1862 in Cabell Co., WV, the son of James Alford and Mary Jane Wilkinson. He married Emma Hager. They had 2 children. Milton died in 1932 and is buried in the Alford Cemetery in Milton, Cabell Co., WV.

            James Alford was b. about 1825, probably in VA. He was the son of George Alford and Mary Burns. On the 1850 census, District 10, Cabell Co., VA, James Alford, constable age 24 b. VA, is living with the family of Isaiah Burns, age 28. Two houses away is Mary Alford, age 76 b. VA, living with the family of James Burns, age 53.

            Richard’s lineage: Richard Hallie 1924 WV1, Early Wine 1895 WV2, Milton Eli 1862 WV3, James 1825 VA4, George ?? 5.

WALLACE HENRY “WALLY” ALFORD

CASPER—At his request, no services will be held for Casper resident Wallace “Wally” Henry Alford, 80, who died July 18, 2004, at his home.

            Born Oct. 12, 1923, in Denver, he was the son of Thomas and Hulda (Huer) Alford.

            He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands.

            In 1987, he retired from the Natrona County Sheriff’s Department.

            He was a master Mason and member of Pathfinder Lodge No. 42, A.F. & A.M.; 32nd-degree Scottish Rite Mason of Wyoming Consistory No. 1 in Cheyenne; a member of Korein Shrine Center in Rawlins; and a member and past president of the Casper Shrine Club.

            Survivors include his daughter, Linda Hubbell, and grandson, Nicholas Hubbell, of Colorado Springs, Colo.

 

AAFA NOTES: SSDI records confirm the birth date of Wallace H. Alford (SS #523-14-5443 issued in CO), but his death date is listed as 20 July 2004.

            On the 1930 census Wallace is listed with his family in Denver (District 50), Denver Co., CO, dwelling #7 on p. 16A: Thomas J. Alford, carpenter in electric shop, age 34 b. CO, age 25 at first marriage; his wife Hulda 30 CO (parents b. Germany), age 21 at first marriage; and sons: Thomas Jr. 10 CO, and Wallace H. 6 CO.

            In 1920 they are living with Hulda’s mother, still in Denver (District 101), dwelling #367: Hulda Heuer, widow age 55 b. Germany, immigrated [looks like] 1874, naturalized 1913; daughter Agnes 19 CO, picker at cracker company; son Silvester 11 CO; daughter Hulda Alfords 20 CO; and son-in-law Tomas Alfords 25 CO (father b. France!, mother b. U.S.), cabinet maker for railroad.

            On Thos. James Alford’s 1917 WWI Draft Registration Card [online at Ancestry.com], he is age 22, a single unemployed cabinet maker living in Denver, Denver Co., CO. He was b. 27 May 1895 in Denver and is responsible for the support of his mother and nephew.

            SSDI records show that Thomas Alford (SS #521-05-9195 issued in CO) was born 27 May 1895 and d. _____ Oct 1973, last residence Denver, Jefferson Co., CO.

            Possible family in 1910: Denver Ward 15 (District 189), Denver Co., CO, dwelling #225: Rose A. Alford, widow age 50 b. MS, 7 children, 7 living; and children: Wallace 23 MS, Florence 21 MS; Thomas 15 CO, and Aletheia 13 CO.

            Possible family in 1900: Denver (District 116), Arapahoe Co., CO, dwelling #7: Thomas J. Alford, policeman age 43 b. Nov 1856 in MS (parents b. GA and MS), m. 19 years; his wife Rose 42 b. Aug 1857 in CO; and children: Juanita 17 b. Apr 1883 in CO; Florence 12 b. March 1888 in CO; Rose 9 b. Sept 1890 in OH [?]; and Thomas 5 b. May 1895 in PA [?].

            Could not locate Wallace or Aletheia in 1900. Could not locate Thomas J. Alford, b. 1856/7, in 1860, 1870 or 1880.
