NEW JERSEY OBITUARIES OF ALFORDS

AND SPELLING VARIATIONS

Obituaries are listed alphabetically by FIRST name. Included are people whose last name, maiden name, or married name is Alford or a spelling variation: Alfred, Alvord, Allford, Halford, Hallford, Holford, etc.

The name of the newspaper (or other source) and place and date of publication follow the name of the deceased. If we included the obituary in AAFA ACTION, the issue is noted.

The Alford American Family Association (AAFA) has often added notes for each obituary, including Social Security Death Index (SSDI) data, relationship of the deceased to other Alfords, and lineages. Extensive research notes are not always included in the interest of making the obituaries available online. We will add to AAFA NOTES as time permits.

Where lineages are included (Alford unless otherwise stated), the format is: Name, year of birth, state or country of birth.

Obituaries of AAFA members and their spouses are also included on the AAFA Member Memorials web page and may include more information.

We welcome corrections and additional information. If you have an obituary from this state that is not included here, please share it with us!

From Women’s Legal History Website

From “Women Lawyers’ Male-Connectedness,” by Mary Erickson, Stanford, 1988—an article about Dorothy’s mother:

Headline is “His Wife a Lawyer.” Article never gives her name! “Mr. Henry S. Alvord, of Vineland [New Jersey], who has been practicing at the bar of this State some seventeen years, has now the unique reputation of being the first lawyer in New Jersey to have his wife associated with him in the practice of law. Mrs. Alvord married two or three years ago the daughter of Dr. Charles Brewer, resident physician of the New Jersey State prison, and this lady, who is the sixth woman to be admitted as a lawyer in this State, will now have her name upon the shingle [but not in this article!] in front of Mr. Alvord’s office, the firm presumably being Alvord & Alvord. We tender to Mr. Alvord our heartiest congratulations. We always believed him to be not only a bright fellow, but one possessed of an unusual amount of good, square, common sense; and his forecast in taking unto himself a helpmeet in business only verifies our judgment of him.”

PERSHING’S FRIEND DIES

LEONIA, N.J., Feb. 28.—Lieut. Col. Elijah Walker Halford, one time private secretary to President Benjamin Harrison and close friend of Gen. John J. Pershing, died yesterday at the age of 95.

NEW YORK TIMES

New York, NY—22 November 1888

MR. E.W. HALFORD TO BE PRESIDENT HARRISON’S PRIVATE SECRETARY

INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 21.—The President-elect this evening tendered to Elijah W. Halford, managing editor of the Indianapolis Journal, the office of private secretary. Mr. Halford is 43 years of age, and came from England, when a child, with his parents, who settled in Cincinnati. He began his newspaper career as a reporter on the Indianapolis Journal 25 years ago, and rose in a few years, through successive promotions, to the managing editorship. He was for a time the managing editor of the Chicago Inter-Ocean, in its first year. Returning to Indianapolis, he resumed the managing editorship of the Journal.

He was for years private secretary to the late Senator Morton. He has long taken an active and prominent part in Indiana politics and was a delegate to the late Chicago convention, representing Indiana on the Committee on Platform, and shares with the Hon. William McKinley of Ohio, the distinction of having contributed no inconsiderable share in the construction of the National platform upon which the late campaign was fought.

As an editorial writer he is widely known for his able and incisive political articles, the pungency of his style giving his writings a distinctiveness, leaving no doubt on the reader’s mind as to their authorship. For several years past Mr. Halford has been on intimate and confidential terms with Gen. Harrison, and his selection for the important place now tendered him therefore occasions no surprise here. The new private secretary is married and has one child, a daughter of 17. He is the elder brother of Mr. A.J. Halford of the Washington Bureau of the Associated Press.

Robert Lee Alford Jr. was born March 17, 1987 in Newark, NJ to Gloria Polite and the late Robert Lee Alford Sr. Robert departed this life on August 7, 2012.

He was a lifelong resident of Newark, NJ and was educated in the Newark Public School System. Robert was affectionately known as “Gucci”. He was a son, brother, nephew, grandson, uncle, cousin and soon to be father. He was a loving, caring, playful person.

As a child he loved the Ninja Turtles and watched them every day. We use to have to hide the movies from him and of course he would throw tantrums until we gave it back. We would tell him that if he continued to watch them the way he did, he would start to look like a Ninja Turtle.

Gucci loved his music especially Gucci Mane and Yo Gotti. He loved to dress and you better not touch him especially his sneakers as he would have the toothbrush and rag ready. He loved his cars and if you ever wanted a ride you had better had gas money. He loved the kids and they loved him back because all you heard them saying was Gucci Gucci Gucci. He had a beautiful smile that left a lasting impression on all who met him.

Although his life was tragically cut short, he touched the lives of many. Gone too soon; Gucci To-Wavey will truly be missed by everyone who knew him.

He leaves to cherish his memory his mother Gloria Polite, brother LaPaul Polite, sister Sharina Alford, two nephews; Jadyn and Jakai Donaldson, grandmother Katherine Polite, eleven aunts; Virgie Rodwell, Barbara Tucker, Phyllis Jamison, Emily Newkirk, Betty Alford, Halel Sellers, T. ENGLEWOOD’S BILL ALFORD FOUND JOY IN GIVING

William J. “Bill” Alford III, a successful business executive who had a vigorous late-in-life career as an Englewood volunteer—and a special affinity for the public schools—has died at 99.

A native of Bogota, Mr. Alford was a third-generation owner of Continental Paper Co., which manufactured paperboard at a mill in Ridgefield Park. He also was part of a group that, in 1964, acquired Poland Spring Water.

He retired early and then focused on Englewood, his home since the late 1950s. He served on the Board of Education in the 1990s and pursued good works through the Englewood Rotary Club and Englewood Community Foundation.

A friend and fellow Rotarian, Norman Davis, said Mr. Alford was not content to lead a self-centered retirement. “His mind was always ticking, always coming up with new projects,” said Davis, a former Englewood councilman and school trustee.

Through the Rotary, Mr. Alford played host to a mother and baby from Ukraine who came to the United States for the child’s lifesaving heart surgery. Finding it hard to say goodbye, he went back to Ukraine with them and spent time in their village.

Many of Mr. Alford’s efforts targeted Englewood’s young people. He helped found a youth council that sought to expand recreation. Through his church, First Presbyterian, he sent lower-income children to summer camp. He was a classroom tutor. He spoke to students about the value of education. He set up a computer lab at the Janis E. Dismus Middle School. He got others involved.

Mr. Alford said in a 2000 interview with The Record that he shifted his attention from the private to the public schools after his minister asked him to consult with city officials on how the church might support the less advantaged.

“I was deeply involved in the East Hill social scene,” he told the newspaper. “I was president of the Englewood School for Boys. My wife was on the board of the Elisabeth Morrow School. At every cocktail party, [private] schools were the subject. We didn’t consider Englewood public schools as anything to talk about. It wasn’t part of our life or our interests.”

His involvement with the public schools brought him deep satisfaction.

“I run into kids every day whom I was involved with years ago, and it’s just a tremendous feeling,” he said in the interview. “I didn’t realize how confining it was, living an existence where everybody is a cookie-cutter of yourself. The involvement with community is in itself a rewarding experience. It’s an exciting experience. This is where the action is.”

Mr. Alford, who would have become a centenarian next Sept. 24, was active in town until very recently.

“When I visited him in June, I went to his Rotary meeting with him and took him to his investment club lunch,” his daughter, Susan Alford Pozdena, said. “Even then he was running around. He always had a positive view. He never looked back.”

Mr. Alford died Dec. 4 at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center.

In addition to his daughter, of Portland, Ore., he is survived by his wife of seven years, Henriette Brooks; a son, Walter Stewart Alford of Gulph Mills, Pa.; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. His first wife, Susan Stewart Alford, died in 1990; a son, William IV, died in 2013.

Arrangements were by Branch Brook Memorial Home, Belleville. The family is planning a memorial service in early 2015.
